Pitch-class is a theoretical model to analyze serial and non-tonal music. Each of the 12 half-steps are assigned a number C=0, C#=1, D=2, etc, and octave displacement is irrelevant. This model helps music analysts to identify pitch structures and pitch-structure relationships in the highly complex works of 2ndViennese School composers among their contemporaries and successors.
