Wikis > Glossary > Isorhythm

Isorhythm is pitch and rhythmic compositional device first used in the 14th century by composer Guillaume Machaut among others. Isorhythm consists of two elements the talia and the colour. The talia is the rhythmic component that is a repeating pattern, while the colour is a repeated set of pitches. Talia and colour do not need to contain the same time span and therefore talia are difficult to perceive aurally.
