Hypermeter, Hyperbeat, Hypermeasure

Wikis > Glossary > Hypermeter, Hyperbeat, Hypermeasure

Hypermeter is “a term first used by Cone  to refer to levels of metrical structure above the notated measure (Cone, 1968). Hypermeasures are not phrases, although phrase structure and hypermetric structure can and do interact” (London, 2012: 17-18). Essentially, groups of measures organize into larger hypermeasures, similar to the way that beats organize into measures. Therefore, hypermeter is a larger scale meter, like hypermeasures are larger scale measures. Hyperbeats are the units of hypermeasures and thus hypermeters.

  1. Specify what is a “hyperbeat”. Also, it is better to not have citations that start in the middle of a sentence and go through another sentence.
