Pulse

Wikis > Glossary > Pulse

pulse is an isochronous sequence of beats that constitutes one level of a rhythm. A given pulse is also called a “pulse sensation” by Parncutt. Each pulse constitutes a single rhythmic layer in a piece, and the most salient pulse is called the tactus by Parncutt.

For more on the cognitive basis for pulse, see pulse perception. The importance of a given pulse is given by its pulse salience.

In Cooper & Meyer (1960), pulse is defined as a series of regularly occurring, equivalent stimuli.
