Ostenato

Wikis > Glossary > Ostenato

Ostestano is simply a repeated pattern. Mainly used during the 16th century with composers such as Monteverdi, the ostenato was used in the lower pitched instruments, and formed the rhythmic structure for the piece. Different ostenati would be used to indicate certain emotions and where often improvised over.
