Form vs Rhythmic Perception

Wikis > Glossary > Form vs Rhythmic Perception

Form Perception:

A reconstruction of relationships between musical events drawing on memory.

Rhythmic Perception:

An understanding of musical events as they happen in the perceptual present, a period of between 3 and 8 seconds. Clarke emphasizes two elements of rhythmic perception: grouping and meter.

Clarke separates these two types of perception because they engage two different types of mental processes. (Clarke, 1999: 476).
