Anaerobic exercise is characterized by intense physical activities that last for a short period of time (usually under 2 minutes, if above two minutes then aerobic). Anaerobic exercises trigger lactic acid production in the muscles, and are used by athletes in non-endurance sports for strengthening. For instance, running the 100 yard spring, or lifting weights, are both anaerobic exercises. Playing soccer is an aerobic exercise.
